Interviewing and Self-Reflection – The Life History Interview –

The life history interview is the very heart of research. Through historical reflection and dialogue with the interviewee, one develops one’s own moral compass. It is not age that distinguishes us from one another; it is the life of the other that we must recognize and acknowledge, that we must respect. We then also hear and see what, though unspoken and unseen, nevertheless finds expression. The life history interview is of central importance for deciphering a family history. The narrator places the families and events within their historical and social context with precision. The narrative is not merely information; it is the evaluation, judgment, criticism, and feelings of a family member who continues to feel part of the group and remains committed to it even after everyone else has passed away or is no longer with us. You always remain a part of your family and the specific local culture you come from, and how you see yourself within it.
