The Evidence of the Crime

If the Americans had not photographed the concentration camps in Germany in 1945, our memory of the reality of that time would be very limited. Along with photographs of the perpetrators, these images serve as authentic testimonies to the crimes. They are evidence. They have been shown time and again in documentary films, school textbooks, exhibitions, and news reports. The first concentration camp that U.S. troops encountered on April 4, 1945, and where they met living prisoners who could testify to life in the camp, was the Ohrdruf concentration camp, located about 14 kilometers south of the Thuringian city of Gotha and serving as a satellite camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp.
