The photo on the right shows a German family sympathetic to the Nazis enjoying a cozy get-together in 1941 in the city of Gotha, Thuringia.

While outside, war, forced labor, deportation, and the extermination of people—often neighbors and family members—were the new norm in Nazi society, German living rooms are fed the illusion of a close-knit community in an ideal world. It was all staged.

A German breakfast with soft-boiled eggs and fresh rolls while others go hungry. The Buchenwald concentration camp was established in 1937. The Nazi symbol shown in the photo was cut out after 1945.
