While outside, war, forced labor, deportation, and the extermination of people—often neighbors and family members—were the new norm in Nazi society, German living rooms are fed the illusion of a close-knit community in an ideal world. It was all staged.

A German breakfast with soft-boiled eggs and fresh rolls while others go hungry. The Buchenwald concentration camp was established in 1937. The Nazi symbol shown in the photo was cut out after 1945.
